6 Years of the Finest Vehicles in Davao City: AutoFest 2008
Autofest 2008 was a smashing success at the Atrium of the Gaisano Mall of Davao last weekend, October 10, 11, and 12. The show was opened by Vice Mayor Sara Duterte and Jonathan Uy of 5th Gear Motorsports.
A record breaking 22 automobiles which included 6 large SUVs were neatly displayed among which were some show stoppers like two Ford Escapes which were identical in all aspects, from the paint to the rims, engine detail and interior which were owned by Joric Confesor and King Sta Ana.
Another pair up of two Austin Minis of Ryan Gaw which were dressed up in Cooper body kits stole the lime light as well. Two ultimate off-road vehicles also made spectators do double takes, a Jeep Wrangler Renegade with full body sticker designed by TBR Concepts and a lifted Jeep Cherokee also were on hand to welcome the audiences.
Heading the display of cars and trucks was a 1994 Mitsubishi Galant owned by Rocky Montañer which sported vertically opening scissor doors. A refurbished drag car of years past owned by Felix Sanchez was a site to behold.
But what gave this show a cut above the rest was a display of old school cars: a completely restored fire engine red 1969 Porsche 936 which is one of the earliest models made by the German automaker, owned by Charlie Gonzalez, a 1991 Porsche 911, one of the last models to sport the solid tail light assembly, owned by Willie Torres, a 1967 Pontiac GTO LeMans (pronounced as la-man), which is the sedan version of the Violet street-eating coupe of Vin Diesel in the end part of The Fast and The Furious and XXX, owned by Kenneth Sy, and a very rare 1972 Mercedes-Benz 500SL, a euro version which was the definitive vehicle to proudly combine both aspects of being a convertible sports car and a luxury hard top coupe, owned by Joe Vincent Atienza.
More than enough spectators packed the Atrium as they went around and admired their favorite picks of the show and took pictures of their dream cars and trucks.
Judging was held on Saturday with three judges from around Davao. The panel was composed of Peter Go, an avid off-roader, a Custom Truck National title holder, and proprietor of Downey Off-Road Shop, Yamboy Caguiat, aka Mr. Talyer TV, an automobile enthusiast, and owner of Great Effects Embroideries Unlimited, and Elmer Hipolito, a motorcycle and car show multi-title holder, the only person who has won back to back Best Engine Display titles, and owner of ECH Lights nad Sounds. The judging lasted for more than 4 hours with actual judging and closed-door deliberations.
